Bacterial community responses to planktonic and terrestrial substrates in coastal northern Baltic Sea

چکیده

Bacteria are major consumers of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in aquatic systems. In coastal zones, bacteria exposed to a variety DOM types originating from land and open sea. Climate change is expected cause increased inflows freshwater the northern which may lead either eutrophication or inputs refractory terrestrial compounds. The compositional functional response bacterial communities such changes not well understood. We performed 2-day microcosm experiment two bays Baltic Sea, where we added plankton extract simulate soil Our results showed that responded differently food substrates but similar way both bays. Plankton addition induced community composition, while no significant occurred treatments. Gammaproteobacteria were promoted by extract, Alphaproteobacteria dominated non-amended controls. Carbohydrate metabolism genes, as aminoglycan chitin degradation, enriched extract. conclusion, rapidly highly bioavailable substrates, had minor influence degraded slowly. Thus, if climate leads eutrophication, large composition function can be expected, inflow will show fast changes. Degradation instead occur over longer periods time, e.g. years. These findings help better understand ability utilize different carbon sources their role ecosystem.

Importance of coastal primary production in the northern Baltic Sea

In this study, we measured depth-dependent benthic microalgal primary production in a Bothnian Bay estuary to estimate the benthic contribution to total primary production. In addition, we compiled data on benthic microalgal primary production in the entire Baltic Sea. In the estuary, the benthic habitat contributed 17 % to the total annual primary production, and when upscaling our data to the...

Beyond bulk properties: Responses of coastal summer plankton communities to nutrient enrichment in the northern Baltic Sea

Enclosure experiments with all combinations of NH4 and PO4 treatments were carried out in the northern Baltic coastal zone during the post–spring bloom growth season. Empirical models were used to identify the important 3d treatment effects on the state and process variables governing the main plankton compartments. Moreover, dilution experiments revealed the main nutrient sources for algal gro...

Community Interactions Modify the Effects of Pharmaceutical Exposure: A Microcosm Study on Responses to Propranolol in Baltic Sea Coastal Organisms

This study investigated the uptake and effects of a common human pharmaceutical, propranolol, on the structure and function of a coastal Baltic Sea model community consisting of macroalga (Ceramium tenuicorne), mussels (Mytilus edulis trossulus), amphipods (Gammarus spp.), water and sediment. The most sensitive species, the mussel, was affected to the same extent as in previous single species s...

Increased freshwater discharge shifts the trophic balance in the coastal zone of the northern Baltic Sea

Increased precipitation is one projected outcome of climate change that may enhance the discharge of freshwater to the coastal zone. The resulting lower salinity, and associated discharge of both nutrients and dissolved organic carbon, may influence food web functioning. The scope of this study was to determine the net outcome of increased freshwater discharge on the balance between autoand het...

Environmental Gradients Explain Species Richness and Community Composition of Coastal Breeding Birds in the Baltic Sea

Scientifically-based systematic conservation planning for reserve design requires knowledge of species richness patterns and how these are related to environmental gradients. In this study, we explore a large inventory of coastal breeding birds, in total 48 species, sampled in 4646 1 km2 squares which covered a large archipelago in the Baltic Sea on the east coast of Sweden. We analysed how spe...
